Will a Broken Serpentine Belt Destroy My Engine?

A serpentine belt drives engine accessories like the alternator, power steering pump, and air conditioning compressor. Failure can drain power and performance. The severity of the damage to the engine is determined by the design of the engine. Modern interference-designed cars can suffer considerable damage from valve and piston collisions. To avoid further issues, a broken serpentine belt should be repaired as soon as possible. If a belt fails, stop, turn off the engine, and have the car towed to a repair facility.

Other Components

  1. Gaskets

Gaskets are critical seals that sit between mating surfaces in an engine or other mechanical components. They are made of rubber, metal, or a combination, and they control fluid and gas leaks and prevent contamination.

  2. Valve Covers

The cylinder head and valve train are protected by valve covers on top of the engine.

  3. Fuel Tanks

The fuel tank feeds fuel to the engine for combustion. Fuel tanks are composed of steel, plastic, or aluminum and incorporate fuel pumps, fuel level sensors, and interior baffles to prevent fuel sloshing.
